School Items.

The schools are now closed. The longest terms ever known in Jasper county. Carpenter township led with 165 days. Jordan, the shortest, with 115 days. The Indiana University closed its school year last Friday. Jasper county was represented by seven students. All have returned to their homes except Geo. E. Mitchell, who will spend his vacation in the eastern part of the state. J. N. Leatherman expects toattend the state normal at Terre Haute the coming year. The Young Peoples Reading Ciicle in Jasper county has been quite successful. Nearly one thousand pupils outside of Rensselaer and Remington Have read the books and received membership cards. The following is a summary of the work for the year just closedr- 1 Number of books on hand at the beginning of the year 791. Number books on hand at the beginning of the year, 794. Number books bought during the year, 862. Total number books now in the schools, 1653>. Number of pupils that have read one or more books, 94)6. Whole number of books read-dur-ing the year, 2591. The larger part of the funds expended was raised by the pupils themselves.

The last commencement for the for the common schools was held at School Dist. No. 8, in Carpenter tp., last Saturday evening. There were four graduates, Carrie Irwin, Minnie Taylor, Rose Hensler and Dora McMurray. The report of teachers examined for the year ending June 15, 1894, made by the county Superintendent to the Supt. of Public Instruction, shows that three males and three females were licensed for 36 months. Seven males and seven females for 24 months. Twenty and thirty-six females for 12 months. Nineteen males and thirteen females for 6 months. Total number mules licensed being 49. Total number females licensed 59. Number of applicants for license rejected during the year, 164. Number of persons now bolding license in the county, 104.
