The County Convention.
AN ENTHUSIASTIC AND HARMONI- - OUS GATHERING OP REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLICANS.
THEIR WORK OF MONDAY SURELY PRESAGES AN OLD TIME REPUBLICAN MAJORITY. AND HERE IS THE TICKET THEY MADE. For County Clerk, WILLIAM H. COO VER, of Carpenter Township. For County Auditor, HENRY B. MURRAY, of Barkley Township. For County Treasurer, JESSE 0. GWIN, of Hanging Grove Township, For County Sheriff, CHARLES W. HANLEY, of Walker Township. For County Surveyor, JOHN E. ALTER, of Union Township. For County Coroner, TRUITT P. WRIGHT, of Marion Township. .. Commissioner—First District. WILLIAM DAHNCKE, of Wheatfield. Township. Commissioner—Second District, JOHN 0. MARTINDALE, of Newton Township. Commissioner—Third District, '■ DEXTER R. JONES, of Carpenter Township.
The Jasper county Republican convention met at the court house last Saturday afternoon. The convention consisted of 96 delegates, and every township and precinct was fully represented—and not by substitutes, either, but by the delegates selected by the people at their primary conventions the Saturday previous. The convention was called to order by County Chairman McCoy. Hon. Robt Parker, of Remington and Hon I. D. Dunn, of Dunnville, were both proposed for chairman, but Mr. Dunn declined to be a candidate and Mr. Parker wcs elected by acclamation. C. W. Coen, of Rensselaer, was chosen ‘secretary, G. E. Marshall assistant secretary and R. P. Benjamin and C. H. Peck, tellers. J. F. Irwin, of Jordan, Delos Thompson, of Marion and John O’Conner, of Walker, appointed committee on credentials. The method adopted of voting for candidates was by ballot. The chairman of each township collected the vote of his township, and when the name of the .township was called, came forward and deposited the ballots in the ballot box. No votes being counted or announced until all were deposited and were then counted by the tellers.
Pending the report of the credentials committee, the convention proceeded to elect delegates to the State Convention. The county being entitled to nine delegates, three delegates and three alternates were chosen from each commissioners district Their names and post-offices being as follows: DELEGATES TO STATE CONVENTION. Abraham Halleck; DeMotte. I. D. Dunn Tefft. J. H. Tilton Wheatfield. E. P. Hammond Rensselaer. T. J. McCoy Rensselaer. Thos. Thompson Rensselaer. Robt. Parker Remington. L. S. Alter Remington. P. H. Lally Remington. ALTERNATE DELEGATES. J. F. Bruner DeMotte. Edward Faiis Medaryville. Charles Myers Wheatfield. W. B. Austin Rensselaer. J. F. Watson Rensselaer. J. M. Wasson Rensselaer. Wm. Marquess .Remington. J. J. Porter Remington.
E. B. Vondersmith..Remington. The credentials committee not yet being ready to report, and it having been learned that Hon. C. B. Landis, of Delphi, was in the room, there was a unanimous call for a speech. Mr. Landis responded to the call in a very graceful manner, and made a short but very telling speech. The impression he made upon the convention was of the most favorable character. The committee on credentials then prasented their report. The list of delegates was called and all responded to their names. The nomination of candidates, in the order named in the call, was then proceeded with. For County Clerk the only name presented was that of the present incumbent, William H. Cocrver, of Carpenter tp., who was nominated by acclamation. For County Auditor Henry B. Murray, of Barkley tp., also the present incumbent, was nominated by acclamation. No other name being proposed. For County Treasurer the names of Jesse C. Gwin, of Hanging Grove and J, M. Wasson, of Marion, were proposed. A ballot was taken resulting in Mr. Gwin’s favor, as follows: Gwin 59A votes. Wasson...; 36| votes. For Surveyor J. E. Alter, of Union, present incumbent; J. C. Thrawls and J. N. Leatherman, of Marion and Myrt Price, of Carpenter were proposed.

ter, Peter Foulks, of Milroy and Harvey W. Wood, of Marion, were named. The ballot: r J0ne5.,......................58 Foulks 8 Wood ... 28 J. McEwen 1 Mr. Jones was declared nominated and the convention adjourned. NOTES. It is a wonderful good ticket, and a sure winner. The big delegations from Marion and Carpenter, took their old places, to the right and left, respectively, of the Chairman’s table, according to immemorial custom.
And according to a still more immemorial custom, good old, “Daddy” Vondersmith, of Remington, appeared in the front row of Carpenter’s delegation. If Carpenter ever sends a delegation to the county convention with “Daddy” Vondersmith left .out, that delegation will have hard scratching to get recognized.
Quite a number of former Democrats and Populists whose eyes have been opened to the true political gospel, appeared as delegates. Still greater numbers turned out to the township conventions. But “just wait till de grabble train comes in” next November, if you want to see the real big rush into the Republican ranks, from the other parties. Marion tp., with its big delegation, was of course disposed to take everything in sight. See how they hogged the nomination for coroner, for instance!
THE LIST OF DELEGATES. ■ The precinct primary conventions were held last Saturday. They were largely attended, and that too, although the number of offices at stake in the contest was very small. It being generally conceded that there would be no opposition to the re-nomination of the present Clerk, Auditor and Sheriff. The voters turned out to the caucuses simply to attest their zeal for the Republican cause. The following is the complete list of delegates who sat in the convention:: Marion Township;—Jacob McDonald, J. F. Watson, J. D. Babcock, Geo. M. Robinson, H. J.
