California’s Unemployed.

Over a thousand unemployed men registered in tte Mayor’s office at Oakland, Cal-, wien called upon ta do so, a few day! ago, and the city has made plans to furnish them work, at fair rinuneration for all of them forthwth. Work on the city streets will rive employment tc about 500 men, ‘hey will be formed in gangs of a hurtlred each, and each gang will have aturn of three days- 1 work, in rotation to be Daid for at the regular rate *f $2 a day. Othei city improvemens will be begun at once to find worj for the remainder. One novel plan adopted has been th< appointment of hirty of the unemployed men as s ocial street watchmen, “because o the present prevalence of footpae and burglars ic Oakland." ?hes men will get SSO a month for at leat two months.
