Napoleonic Protection.
The manufacture of beet sugar in Europe was the work of Napoleon. He determined that as little foreign sugar as possible should be used, and,by taxation, raised the price to $1.25 a pound, at the same’ time encouraging the French fanners to plant beets. They did so, and thus began the beet sugar industry on the continent of Europe.
