THE INDIAN DOOMED TO EXTINCTION.
The Commissioner of Indian Affairs has received a number of belated annual reports of Indian agents. The majority of them indicate general prosperity among the tribes and a gradual advancement in civilization. Several of the agents comment on the indifference of the Indians to their marriage ties and their unwillingness to abandon old customs. This condition of affairs is especially noticeable at the Sisseton agency in South Dakota. Only a small number of th- Sissetons are self-supporting, and in the opinion of the agent they have retrograded since the opening of the reservation. Agent Cole, ‘Of the Colville reservation in Washington, believes that the efforts to civilize the red men are not successful, and says that by intermarriage and heavy death rate the Indian is doomed toextinccion in a few generations.
