This Just Fits Egoti[?] Keeley.
Rochester Republican. The country is now fairly overun with evangelists trying to imitate Sam Jones. Some of them are doing a fairly successful work, but the great majority indulge in a lot of rot that is disgusting to intelligent, fairminded people. It is very strange that church members, who are using their best endeavors to live peacefully and prayerfully, should permit themselves to be religiously slandered and positively insulted by a pessimistic stranger and pay him a large salary for his services. If any member of the church should repeat the statements to the congregation that are made by the average migrating evangelist he would be denounced as a blackguard and unworthy of church fellowship. In the of other years the pulpits were occupied by men of the greatest sanctimonious demeanor and there was a special holiness about every word and act. But time has brought many changes. The effort now is to get up some great sensation to attract an audience. Old time piety has taken a back seat.
