COLUMBIAN RELICS.
The United States Wdi Purchase a Vai a. able Collection from the Duke of Veragna. The collection of Columbian relics now on exhibition at the convent of La Rabida, on the World’s Fair grounds, is the property of the Duke of Veragua. It con sista of letters and other papers, •wooden cases, iron vases, etc., 187 articles in all. Negotiations have been in progress for some time looking to the transfer of these to the Government of the United States, and it is now annouheed that they will bo removed to Washington at the close of the Fair, and will become the property of the Government. ■ > ’ Thomas Smothers, who left England to visit the World’s Fair, was smothered to death under a load of hay nt Mascoutah, Hl.ij where hewu« working for a farmer.
