The civil service commissioners announce that in addition to the usual clerical examination, applicants must bo prepared for examination in modern languages—German, French, Italian and Spanish—library economy, bibliography and literature of agriculture. The Duke of Veragua has written a card of thanks to Secretary of State Gresham, for the honors conferred and . hospitality extended to himself and family by the government -of the United States during his sojourn in this country, and expressing profound admiration for the United States as a Nation and country. He congratulates the managers of the World’s Fair, and also thanks them officially for courtesies received. United States Treasurer Morgan, Wednesday, received a cablegram from London, stating that Baring Magonn & Co., of New York and London, had shipped *900,000 in gold to the United States. This is the fi-«i shipment of foreign gold in any considerable quantity to the United States during the present month, and is looked upon $s showing that , the tide of gold exports from this country to Europe has turned. For the past three weeks no gold has been exported from New York to Europe, and as a consequence the TreasSry Department has been gaining gold uriug that period, the net gold balance standing at *94,050,310. It is probable that the treasury will anticipate the quarterly nterest due July 1 on the four per-cent, bonds by paying It next week. There Is general rejoicing among Congressmen now in Washington over the announcement that the President has decided to remain until the latter part of July. Ho is anxious that the internal revenue service shall be In the hands of the friends of the'Administratlon at the beglnnitg of the fiscal year, and it is said to be his intention to make as many changes In that branch of the service between low and the 30th Inst, as is consistent with the line of policy he has already laid down. This is one of the reasons why ho finds it inconvenient to leave the capital at this time. Besides, he is deeply interested in the. financial problem and he feels that it is his duty to stay and assist Secretary Carlisle in managing the finances.
