Rudyard Kipling’s father has been forced by reason of ill-health to resign his government post at Lahore. Kipling pere is the author of a book called “Man and Beast in India,’’ but his best-known contribution to literature is his designation of Lahore as “Hell with the lid on.” When Gen. Dodds received his brevet during his campaign in Dahomey he was unable to procure there the four silver stars that, stitched in the uniform, are a sign of the general’s rank. He therefore made use of silver coins as a substitute, and the only ones he could obtain were English shillings bearing the Queers head. Prof. T. K. Cheyne, the eminent Biblical scholar, of Oxford, has the sight of only one eye, and he cannot use that except in natural light. And yet he has written a large number of books requiring an immense ammount of original investigation. Monsighor Satolli is to be invited to be preeent at the celebration, this summer, of the fiftieth anniversary of the Pittsburg Roman Catholic diocese.
