HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
There is nothing more difficult to serve neatly than a boiled fish. Do not cut the portions, but carefully separate them where the flakes are joined. It is sard there is no manufactured article of powder better than the ordinary corn starch, the kind used for culinary purposes. It gives the desired smoothness to the face, and is harmless. Insects may be destroyed with hot alum. Put it in hot water and let it boil until the alum is dissolved. Apply hot with a brush, and all creeping things are instantly destroyed without danger to human life or injury to property. A good paper-hanger’s paste Is made of 4 pounds of fine wheat flour mixed with a small quantity of cold water, thoroughly stirred; 2 ounces of pulverized alum are then added, and, when dissolved, a gallon of boiling water. When cool it may be thinned as desired with cold water and used. Speaking of guests, it is a good idea to leave a needle-book with needles threaded and ready for usf on the dressing table. A braid or t button is loosened, a sleeve giveJ way, a bit of cloth is frayed, andthi woman away from home has not al Es her work-box with her. A lble and a needle boolr furnisher as above, with a pair of scissors, ar« thoughtful additions to comfort.
