JOHNSON MADE THINGS LIVELY.
'The Indiana Congressman Shows Hlu Dowers as a Rapid Speakcs. Washington Special. Congressman Henry U. Johnson, of Indiana, took a “practice spin" yesterday morning merely to warm up for an event to come off before the close of Congress. He started speaking on a contested election case, at an easy gait of 196 words to the nj Mute, and the stenographers looked confident.- The pact* was shortly increased to 210 words, and the official, gentlemen who shorthand burning thoughts, each had his tongue jn the hollow of his cheek and his head leaning far to one side. In a quarter of an hour a 221 rate was attained and he sent himself along’at this gait, holding himself well in band and going easily, around the curves, a little later he had moved up to 227 words every sixty seconds, and they sounded a good deal like pouring shot into a tin pan. It was the anxious hope of listeners that he would become excited and endeavor to break his record, but he eased up a little and finished' very fresh at about 228. The words were a little longer than is customary with him. The stenographers picked up their pencils from the floor and pulled their fingers straight. There is no telling what Mr. Johnson could do on a kite-shaped track. An insurance company has struck upon something new in the way of an advertisement. All the agents arc required, carry to canes with nobby glass heads, in which are exposed the pictures qf the leading officers of the company and a brief statement of the excellence of the conqpany over all competitors. j
