A Long Balloon Journey.
London Public Opinion. M. Maurice Mallet describes what ho claims to be the longest balloon ascent on record. His balloon, Les Inventions Nouvelles, started from the gas works of La Villette, Paris, on October 23, and the voyage terminated at Whalen, in central Germanv, at 6a.m. on the 25th, after a total journey of thirty»six hours ten minutes above ground. The flight was interrupted several times by the snow which fell in the higher regions of the atmosphere. When lower strata were reached the snow melted and the balloon regained its ascending power. During one of these descends it was stopped and examined by a Prussian gendarme, who had followed it nt a gallop for some distance. The route passed over part oL Belgium, Taunus and the Odenwald, and the towns of Metz and Frankfort wero recognized in passing. “I can dispose of a whole boatload of sailors,” remarked the whale, “but it’s when I swallow thah* yarns that I feel worsted.”
