A Novel and Successful Social.

The “Hard Times” Social which was held at Gillam school-house in I Gil Jam township Wednesday evening j Dec. 28, was a success both socially ami financially. It was held under the direction of the teacLer, Alias Gertrude Robinson, for the purpose of making money with which lo buy Reading Circle books for the school. Teh cents admission was charged at the drvor and before eight o’clock the house was packed to overflowing. About two hundred persons partook of the “hard times” supper, which of course was served iu hard times dishes. IVzes were awarded to the

j two persons that best represented i lihjtl times. Five judges were ap- ! pointed and by their unanimous decision, the cake was awarded l<» Npra Watson and the pie to McKendree F..ris. Another interesting feature ot the evening was the bidding upon a flue cake. The names of two i i i u ‘a r young ladies, Cora Faria and j Lizzie Ginn were proposed lor the i cake. li. L. P. Massey made hlmj self famous ss an auctioneer in crying the sale. Miss Ginn having received the highest amount was given the cake. The net proceeds of the evening amounted to $24 71, and & part of the money will be used toward purchasing Reading Circle books. The remainder will b 8 used in purchasing a cabinet in which to keep the library books of the school-
