And Hit Week’s Canvass in Jasper County. Judge William Johnston, of Valparaiso. the Republican candidate for Cor grew in thi3 district, completed, bis week’s canvass of Jasper county lost Saturday evening, with a speech at Egypt school house, in Jordan Tp. His first meeting was at Wheatfield, Monday afternoon, and the wide-1 awake people of the northern tier gave bim a splendid meeting, fully 600 people being present. Monday night he spoke at West Vernon school housn in Gillam Tp., Tuesday night at Sandridge in Barkley Tp., Wednesday night at Surrey, Thursday night at Mason school house, in GilJam, Friday night at Rensselaer, Saturday afternoon at Remington and Saturday at Egypt. lion. S.F. Thompson accompanied him to his Saturday meetings and spoke at both of them.

The school house meetings were nearly all of them very large for the neighborhoods, and in every one the interest was excellent. The Rensselaer meeting was a very good one, the court bouse being filled nearly to the limit of its sealing capacity, witb an intelligent ami appreciative audience. Very favorable reports are also given of the Remington mooting. Judge Johnston lias made a most favorable impression among our citizens, both as a public speaker 3nd in his walks and talks with the i>cople. As an orator be is cei tainly one of the most impressive and convincing that ever came among our people. His style of speaking is plain and simple but very impressive. His grasp of the whole political situation, past and present, seems to be complete. llis reasoning is of the clearest and most convincing character; and wliil - his logic is merciless in exposing the fallacies of opposing political parties, there is no unkindness nor abuse in what he says regarding those who bold the fallacious views. The Judge has certainly greatly strengthened his own and tbo Republican cause in general by bis week’s canvass in this county.

Firmcrs are sowing wheat and some have finished. Peaches are the sum total of our fruit and they are very scarce. School in this township begin the second Monday in Octubi r. Mr. Good, of Osborne vicinity has sold hia farm, and is now locking for another location. We hope they will not leave us, but will select one of the homes he has been sighting. Mrs. I. Mr. Jacob Parker and family moved Monday to V. healfteid, where he has engaged work for the fall and winter. It was delivered at an unlucky time however, as so many political men were attending the State fair.

The beautiful and spacious residence of Hon. D. 11. Patton was Ihe scene of a happy and brilliant gathering last Saturday evening, the occasion being the twenty fifth anniversary of the. wedding of the Dr. and his wife. The company assembled at the residence of O. 31. Vickery and ac the appointed time marched to the Patton residence, bearing with them ns & slight token of their respect and and resjieot and appreciation, a handsome silver tea service. McKee, and responded to l<y tbfe Dr, who , notwithstanding I bis evident embarrassment and complete surprise expressed the thanks of himself and wife in courteous words, and hado all who had come at least one hundrtd, a hearty welcome. Mis. 0.- P. Tabor has so far recovered from her long and painful at tack of rheumatism as to be able to walk out and visit her friends. The readers of the Republican who live in Remington and vicinity should attend the entertainment at the Methodist chuicli on Friday evening of this week. The exercises will be both entertaining and instructive and the collection which should be liberal, will go to the missionary cause. The friends will remember that no fee can be taken at the door but all will be expected to give to the collection. A number of tbc friends of the newly wedded couple, Mr. and Mrs. Will Geirr, gave them a pleasant surprise party on Monday evening of this wei k. It was what might be called a house-warming as Mr. and Mrs. Geier/ have just commenced housekeeping. It goes without saying that they had a good time.
