SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON.

1 Bnnday. July 3. ; i CHE ASCENSION OF CHRIST. —ACTS 1: 1-12 Supt.—l. The former treatise have 1 made, O Thoophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach. School,—2,’HJntil, the day id which he was taken up, after that Ire through-the Holy Ghost had given commandments nnto the apostles whom he had chosen. 3. To whom also be showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of things pertaining to the king - dom of God. , 4. And, being assembled with them, commanded them that should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise Of the Father, which, saith ho, ye have heard of me. 5. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6. When therefore they were como together, they asked of him, saying Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom tc Israel? ~ 7. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up: and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10. And whilo they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he wen Pup, behold, two men stood by them in whHe apparel: 11. Which also said. Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesu9. which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. 12. Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a Sabbath day’9 Journey. The inductive method of study requires us to read all the parallel accounts, as well as the lesson, and from these gain a clear knowledge of the facts of this period of Christ’s life. The section of history, of which the text is a part, includes the whole chapter, and should all be embraced la the broad view of the lesson. Author. —Luke, the writer of the Gospel. Place of Writing.—Probably at Rome. Date of Writing.—About A. D. .63, at the close of Paul’s two years’ Imprisonment at Rome. Luke.—Greek “Lucas,” a contraction of Lucanus. A Greek, born probably at Antioch;,a physician, educated in the Greek literature; a companies, and friend of Paul. - • Time. —The ascension was Thursday, May 18, A. D. 30. Introduction. —Jesus was crucified on Friday, April 72 He rose Sunday April 9, and then for forty days appeared to the disciples on vafcious occasions, teaching them and fitting them for the great work of founding the Church. The lessons to-day reviews these forrty days, and' .gives--an account of Jesus’ 'last words on earth. Helps over Places. —1. Former treatise: the Gospel of Luke. 3.
