The Price of Newspapers.
The Rochester Sentinel long insisted that the dollar a year subscription price of a certain. Rochester news paper was a ruinous financial venture and the Rejmblicun now' ‘comes out with a candid confession that the argument was right. The liejmblcon says: * „ “We published the Republican for five yfcars at one dollar per year about starved out at it, and so we resolved tiiat inasmuch as there is not another county paper in Indiana published at one dollar, and many of them are two dollars, we would go back to the old price of one dollar and a half. Whenever you can get a pair of home-made boots as cheap as ready-made boots or a tailor-made suits of clothes as cheap as you cap buy “hand-me-downs,” we will continue to work for nothing and board ourselves, ” . - ~ —-— : The fact is no live county paper can Jbe made at one dollar a year with any profit Lo the publisher and a newspaper reader who insists that the editor and publisher shall work day and night, as nearly all have to do, for bare expenses, is not made of tile right kind of stuff to add encouragement to industry, pleasure to their fellow beings, or profit to a progresssi vc age.—Delphi Journal.
OBITUARY.
Hugh E. Coen, of Birdville, Texas formerly of Rensselaer, Jasper County, Indiana,,was born July 4th, 1834 in Marion County, Ohio, removed to the State of Indiana with his parent# in 1841, thence into Jasper county in 1850. Was married to Mary Yeoman in the Spring of 1858. To them were bom 9 children, 8 of whom and his faithful, loving companion survive him. About 30 years ago he located on an unimproved farm in Newton township Jasper county, six miles west of Rensselaer, where ha,, and his family endured the hardships and privations attending the opening up and the improving of a farm in an early day, but by continued and persistent labor he succeeded in establishing himself upon one, among the best improved farms of Jasper county. Twenty one years ago he joined the Free Will Baptist church, under the preaching of Eldep K. I. Higgin of which he remained a faithful and consistent member until called by the good “Master” from labor to reward, after an illness of twenty-five days, at his late home, Birdville, Texas, (where he had moved in January 1892) at the age of 57 years, II months and 3 days. He was the youngest son of John and Aseneth Coen. He had five brothers and two sisters, of whom but two brothers survive him, viz. John Coen and William S. Coen, both of this vicinity. He was a man of great moral force, manifesting to all with whom he had to do, that nobility which is fonnd only in the sonls and lives of the devout and meek followers of Lord Christ.
ago, that about the time the suckers began to run ..in the river in the spring, that the new railroad projects would begin to put forth the tender buds of hope. Xn those days it was an off week when The Republican did not announce the chartering of another railroad company which proposed to build a railroad to cross Jasper county. The Rochester, Rensselaer A St Louis was one of the earliest of these in the field and the last to leave it. In fact, it died hard, and, indeed, revived consciousness after many periods of suspended animation, but this year even Major Bitters, of the Rochester Hepubliqan, has not had the courage to insert his old electrotyped paragraph, heretofore republished every spring, announced the revival of the project and its almost certain construction “this season.” It is now evidently dead for good, and there is nothing to take its place except a faint and uncertain rumor, noticed lately in an Illinois exchange, to the effect that there is some talk of a railroad from Logansport, this state, to Streator, 111. This, if built, would certainly come to Rensselaer, as a direct line from Logansport to Streator would pass only, four or five miles south of town. It would be a good route for Jf new railroad for Rensselaer. It would give the .advantages of an eastern market, and competing rates. Tor an< * 3^ and more important still, would give ns cheap coal from the big coal regions Streator.

REMINGTON ITEMS.
Children’s Day is one of the institutions of the church, and was never more beautifully observed than on Sunday last, in the M. E. chureh, especially during the even service, which was given up almost entirely to the children of the Sunday School, the only exceptions being the reading of a paper by Mrs. J. I). Allman concerning the object of Children’s Day, and short addresses by the pastor and Prof. Dickerson. The pastor'spoke briefly as to the great amount of good that was done by the funds obtained. on this day, and Prof. Dickershn urged upon parents and children the beauty and necessity of Christian education. The little ones were in gala dress ; flowers and handsome mottoes abounded, excellent music and good recitations were rendered, and altogether it Was a pleasant and happy time. The collections amounted to about fifteen dollars. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pefley visited last week with friends at Indianapolis and Greencastle. Mrs. H. H. Walker and two little daughters left on Tuesday last for Chicago, where he will visit her three sons and other relatives. The three Walker brothers are all employed in one store and are most excellent young men. Thomas Harris’s horse collided with an incoming freight train last Wedneseay and was instantly killed. Hon. 0. P. Taber has been on - the sick list but is now recovering. Mrs. Updyke left here last Friday for Chicago, where she Will undergo a difficult and dangerous operation for the removal of a tumor in the «r? left side. She is in the Presbyterian Hospital. —-—•- •
Mrs. Benjamin Hart died on Monday last at her home in Jordan township. The interment was in the Dobbins cemetery. The marriage of Daniel O’Connor and Mips Deed Gunan occured last Tues. morning in the Catholic church in this place, Rev. Hellh&ke officiating The bride who is a very beautiful young lady was attired in a lovely dress of heliotrope lonsdown, as was also her bridesmaid Miss Lizzie Clo wery, and both looked very handsome as did the groom and his brother. Dennis, who acted as groomsman. The happy couple left for Detroit, Mich. r after a wedding breakfast at the O’Conner residence. Mr. James Parks has been suffering, more or less for the past few years with a disease which is now pronounced tumor of the stomach. His many friends here and elsewhere will hope that the disease will yield to treatment, as modern medical and surgical treatment is truly wonderful. Odd Fellows decoration day was most beautifully and appropriately observed here on Friday of last week. The brethren of the mystic tie, in full regalia, marched to the Methodist church to the music of the band; where short addresses were delivered by Rev. A. H. DeLongJand Rev. Jenkins, of Goodland, both of them earnest aid eloquent. Good and appropriate music was rendered and after the exercises at the church the members of the order and % long line of citizens repaired to the cemetery where after the reading of the responsive service from the ritual, with the band playing a dirge, the graves of the de&d brethren were decorated with flowers. It is a beautiful custom and it is to be hoped that it will be observed until the end of time. Remingtonian.

Corn Planted.
Editor Republican.— Perhaps it is needful to drop a few thoughts to our fellow farmers.as the rains have caused much worry in getting com planted. Well some have done and some are yet plainting and the worry likely is partly Over, only that it was too late. Well now, farmers, don’t wony and if you do worry, get right to stirring that planted corn ground. Don’t think you must have a failure, that depends mostly on yourself. If you sit down or go to town whilst you should be after cultivating your planted com and giving it a fair chance (as it always should have, planted early or late,) land here, as well as elsewhere, is not strong enough to raise a big crop of weeds and of com at the same time. Gorto work and give your com a chance and don’t worry over the late planting. That is all past now. I<ook ahead, and go ahead, keep this in your mind always; and make your actions respond to your mind, strictly so. Neither does morn . grow in water. Take all obstuctions out of the way, that is a hindrance to the com that is in your power, and then trust Providence for the balance. Don’t worry about Him ; but worrry about yourself, if you must worry. The best way is to keep cool and stqdv yourlausiness, and-attend to it; if yofr are not quite ready, make yourself, ready, and don’t tarry. If it don’t suit your taste exactly, change your taste to suit it, and go ahead. This is applied to all farmers, none excepted. Bahki.ey Tp.
