Beatrice Is Now Happy.
Some opinions are valueless b. sause they cost nothing to produce. "More patriotism and less politics Is the crying need of the age.”* We do not think so. We know there is a plenty of politics, and we beliete that if the occasion should ever offer no nation on the globe could show as much patriotism .to the square inch •s the United States. The Massachusetts Legislature b,.', decided that its powers arc rot equal to the suppression of the cigarette habit among young boys and concluded not to make the attempt. The strong arm of parental Authority can do no more, toward accomplishing the desired reform than can the itrongarm of the law. and frequently the maternal slipper, conscientiously applied, is weightier than all th enactments that can be crowded into the statute books. Spank the little rascals.
It is a significant sign of the times that Queen Victoria should have notified the Duke of Cumber, land that beyound her reign, the Cumberland family cannot depend upon support at the cost of the Eng* lish treasury. There is nothing that the English democracy, now fast advancing toward political control? more bitterly resents than the'large annuities bestowed upon sprigs of royalty. They render no public service and denunciation of them as pampered paupers is common at rad ical gatherings. Dr. Livingstone once said he had walked for weeks through a region in Africa where a lake ought to be, according to the maps. Joseph Thomson reported when he returned to England awhile ago that, if the maps were accurate, he had been sleeping in the middle of Lake Bangweolo; and now Mr. Fortin writes that there is something wrong with the big island mapped in the Gulf of Paria, on the northeast coast of Venezuela, for he has walked all over it, andi s unable to find where it is detached from the mainland; all of which goes to show that he is a great cartographer who can satisfy every explorer.
Papers have been filed at the State Department asking for damages from the Chilean government for injuries to the sailors of the United States Steamship Baltimore, at Valparaiso. For “false imprisonment and 4 assault,” four sailors want $30,000 each; for “very grave injuries,' three want $150,000 eaeh; for ‘ ‘seri ous injuries," sixteen want from $50,000 to SIOO,OOO each; for “for false imprisonment and assault,” eleven want from $30,000 to $40,000 each. The aggregate amount of the claims s $2,065,000- yhis is a monstrous attempt at blackmail. Of course the Bailors have been put up to it by shyster lawyers who hope to use the ■ government to feather their Probably SSOO apiece would more than compensate each of the claimants for all the injuries he received.
Dr. Blyden, the well-known scholar of Liberia, has said that he can visit his intellectual equals in England without being reminded of the fact that he is a negro. German newspapers have recently asserted that some men have been specially honored in their gauntry simply because they ar6 negroes; and they mentioned a recently deceased young man, know as James Garber, who was taken to Germany from the Guinea coast, and whose funeral in Berlin a few weeks ago was attend ed by four hundred people, wh u greatly admired a fine floral crown on the coffin insaribed, ‘‘From his friends in the Society of African Exploration.” • . 1 It is an interesting phase of the scramble for Africa that the natives who have been taken to Europe have been treated as friends and brothers, and that some writers like Dr. Wolf and Mr. Grenfell, hive advised white men going to Africa to wed the dusky maidens of the Dark Continent. —N. It is understood by the Roman populace that Beatrice Cenci is now in heaven. There has been a legend that when she was executed she went to purgatory, and that she was to •tay there so long as the Borghese family, to whom- the pope distributed the Cenci property, kept it with profit and enjoyment The Borgheses are now almost ruined, and so it is be
