More About That Proposed Bridge.
Editor Republican; In the Republican of June 18th, 1891, you say in regard to the joint meeting of Jasper and Porter County Commissioners, which was held Tuesday June 9th at Hammcnd, Ind., that the agent of Nelson Morris was there and said the proposition of the Commissioners would be accepted. Now at I was there and acting in the above capacity for Mr. Morris I will have to deny the above arrangement as far as Morris is eeneemed. but I did agree for Morris to build three eights of one mile of grade for his portion of the work, which I think was an exceed- ! ingly good offer for him, as he only, owns about twelve hundred acres in that township, while there is another firm which owns about three thousand acres, has not signified their willingness of giving anything. As I understood the arrangements at Hammond it was as follows: We would accept the S3OO as far as it went, and would try to raise the balance of the amount required to build the grade by private subscription, and which I have tried to do, but find it very difficult work to make people in Keener and Wheatfield townships believe that we, personally, should make an improvement for the benefit of the public. They said they never heard of such a thing being done in the central or southern part of our county, whenever they made any public improvements. The above grade would cost about $3700; after taking out the donation of the Com- 1 missioners you see we would only j have to raise $3400. But even that' amount cannot be raised by subscrip-j tion. Now in my way of thinking, j the improvement can be made in the ' following manner; Have tic Trus-! tee of Keener township' issue bonds i not exceeding in amount SISOO, to! be paid out of the township road fund | as fast as it is collected, then get all I the donations wu can from people own- j ing lands, in the western part of Wheatfield township and after the above is done have the people of Jasper County through tbeir Commission- i ere furnish the balance of the money j ToTBuTHTus a good grade, as it is qur j right to have it, and we are entitled to it and want it. Respt. Yours.
