Black Pearls.
It fe not often that women hare admirable jewels and are not aware of the fact This story, told by a New York paper, may or may not be true, but it is worth repeating: When the late Mrs. John Jacob Astor died she left all her personal property, including her splendid collection of jewels, to her husband. When the late John Jacob Astor was about starting for Europe last summer he sent the precious casket of jewels as a gift to his daughter-in-law, Mrs. William Waldorf Astor. ' Mrs. Astor, who was in town onl. to say good-by, sent the box to a safedeposit, company unopened, and then returned to Newport During the summer she saw a woman at the Casino wearing black pearls. •Oh, Fd like to have some black pearls!” she exclaimed. •‘But you have all the Astor jewels.” “Yes, but I’ve never opened the jewel case and don’t know what’s in it.” “What!” gasped a half-dozen women in various stages of collapse. “Well, yon just send for it at once.” The case was duly forwarded, and theism. sure enough, were the celebrated Astor pearls, a set unequaled in the .world for size, color, and symmetry. American clams are to be planted at various points on the English coast, in the hope that they may be propagated <or the market. «
He Visited Mecca.
Sir-Richard Burton, the cridfrf’aied Eastern traveler and explorer, who died lately, was a native of Galway county. He wrote a very amusing account df his visit to the City of the Saints, as he calls the capital of Utah. He gave a very graphic account of the Mormons, their laws, religion, etc. Sir Richard was one of the three Europeans who have visited Mecca, the sacred city of Mahomet, which is yearly visited, by fully 100,000 Mahometan pilgrims from all parts of the world. He spent two years in acquiring a knowledge of Arabic and Hindustanee. The former language was necessary so as to attain to a perfect knowledge of the laws, rites, etc., of the faith of the Prophet, as set forth in the Koran; the latter he required in order to sustain the character which he assumed as a disguise — that of an Indian hokimor physician. So careful was he to avoid discovery that he adopted the Indian costume prior to his departure from London for Cairo, and when he arrived at that city he went to live amongst the natives, never, during a residence of two years, holding any communication with any of the European residents of Cairo. All these precautions were necessary, as, had his actions in any way excited suspicion amongst the pilgrims that he accompanied in the long and tedious journey to Mecca, he would have been cut to pieces. As it was, he nearly lost his life through entering the holy place at Mecca that contains the kaaka, or sacred stone, by inadver tently putting his right foot forward first on crossing the threshold at the entrance. But for his apparent rapt devotion and reverence while praying at the spot where the stone is suspended, he would have been slain, as one of the pilgrims had followed him, knife in hand, his suspicions having been aroused through the mistake he made on entering.
Russo-American Mails.
In consequence of the large immigration from Russia to the United States the volume of correspondence between the two cc untries has been greatly enlarged within a short time. The mail bags sent from here to Russia and brought herefrom Russia are more numerous and heavier than they were a year ago. The letter mail has increased far more than the newspaper mail. The papers of Russia do not favor the Hebrews who are coming here, and are not in favor with Russian Hebrews, while any American Hebrew papers that may be sent to Russia are brought under the censorship. But letters are allowed to pass between the two countries, and the number of mail bags for and from Russia at our postoffice gives evidence that there is an extensive correspondence between the Russian Hebrews who have come here and their friends who are still subjects of the Czar.

Wanted the Old Song,
“Mister,” said a haggard-looking man, as he walked into the hardware store, “can you tell me where I can buy a phonograph?” “I guess we can order one for you, tir?” said the salesman who met him it the door. His face expressed surprise, but his tone conveyed assurance. “Can you get one that will work automatically—one that you won't have to grind yourself, but can fix it up and let it go off of its own ac•ord?” “I think we can arrange an attachment that will accomplish that result.” “All right; get it as quick as you can, will you?’ v •‘You want it as a sort of amanuensis, I suppose?” “No; my wife has gone out of town. I find that when I get home at night everything is so kind of solemn and still that I don't feel like going to bed, and when I do to bed the silence is so oppressive that I can’t stand it. So I thought if j could get a phonograph and have the aired gii 1 talk into it for about threequarters of an hour; something about its being a nice time of night for a self-respecting .married man to be getting home, and all that sort of thing. I would set it before I went to bed and succeed in getting to sleep. It’s funny how a man will miss these fid familiar sounds.”

A perceptible decrease tn deafness has been noticed of late, which Is partly accounted for, by those in position to know, to the more general use of artificial means, now perfected Lp a degree hitherto deemed impossible. Changing Defeat to Victory,
The genius of Sheridan st Winchester changed defeat to victory, So when feeble adversaries in the shape of inefficient remedies fail to stay the progress of that obstinate and malignant foe, Saalaria. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters turns the tide—drive* the enemy back. Nothing in the materia medica, or oat of it. compares with thia as an opponent of every form of malarial disease. Chills and fever, dumb ague, bilious remittent, and ague sake—it matters not—one and all are extirpated by the Bitters. To take a course of the great preparative in advance of the malarial season, is to buckle on, as it were, an armor of proof which defies attack. So-fortified, so protected. you shall be scatheless. Remember, too, that the Bitters is an eradicator of liver complaint, constipation, rheumatism, kidney complaints and dyspepsia. There isn’t much deception about dressmakers. They are generally busy when they seam-sew. —— Five cents saved on soap; five dollars lost on rotted clothes. Is that economy? There is not 5 cents difference between the cost of a bar of the poorest soap made and the best, which is, as all know, Dobbins’ Electric. The egg is hardly a coquettish affair at* any time, but there is no denying that in this gay spring time it is full of chic.
