At the Universal Exposition of 1889 at Paris, France, the best sewing machines of the world, including those oi America, were in competition. They were passed upon by a Jury composed of the best foreign mechanical experts, two of whom were the leading sewing machine manufacturers of France. This jury, after exhaustive examination and tests, adjudged that the Wheeler & Wilson machines were the best of all, and awarded that company the highest prize of sered, the GRAND PRIZE, giving other companies only gold, silver and bronze medals.. The French Government, as a further recognition of superiority, decorated Mr. Nathaniel Wheeler, president of the company, with the Cross of the Legion of Honor, the most prized honor of France. On Lookout Mountain.
' Editor Refurtjcan:- We wish to: state through the columns of your’ paper, a few fhvts in regard to. Chat- ’ tanooga and vicinity which may be ; of interest toyou and your readers; We-arc at this time -on Lookout Mountain about 500 feet abovethe city. From the highest point at Lookout Inn, one can see into seven different states, and the precipice called Sunset Rock, overhanging a deep abyss, affords a splendid view of the Tennessee river with its many curves, the most decided curve being at the foot of the mountain encircling the land called the Indian Moccasin. This Mountain is fifty miles in length making a gradual slope entering, Georgia and is one distinct mountain, apparently not belonging to any particular range. The remains of the old Confederate Fort on Lookout Mountain show the prominent position held by the confederates at that time, and the apparently impossible ascent of Gen. Hooker up its steep and rugged sides, in the battle above the Clouds.” The most charming view of the city is from Cameron Hill, 200 feet above the city, at the very brink of the river, looking toward the east, the river flowing on the west side of the principal portion of the city. Intervening is Orchard Knob, being Gen. Grant’s Headquarters at the time of the charge on Missionary Ridge, it is a beautiful suburb. The scenery viewed from the Ridge is certainly worthy of mention. Looking to the east the mountains pf North Carolinia are visible and are very picturesque when snow-capped. The pretty little suburb Ridgedale, at the feet of the Ridge is very inviting to tourists, East Lake being of great attraction. The distance between this elevation and Lookout Mountain is over 7 miles ami well populated. Gen. <Bragg’s headquarters on the Ridge are very readily designated by two very large trees which can be seen from any point. In the National Cemetery over
13,000 Union soldiers are interred and handsome monuments are erected in memory of those proud and gallant spirits. After visiting the Cyclorama, a realistic scene of the Storming of Missionary Ridge, and the city during that time, which was a mere village, the views taken from this point, the scenery on a whole is very impressive. Here are the following lines which I chanced to see as a souvenir of the Cyclorama; THE HEROES WHO DIED. “God knows who was right, Ah, yes it is true, And the God of the Gray Is the God of the Blue; He bore their proud spirits To mansions above, And He crowned them at last With His garland of love.” “In heaven above us God opens His gate, """ No strife, no contentions, No discord, no hate; The portals axe open" And there, side by side, Stand the heroes of battle, The heroes that died.” “God welcomes them all, Though in battle array, One bore the bright Blue, The other the Gray. Though one fought for Union, The other for State, One angel of mercy Guides all at God’s gate.” To-day it was raining in the city below, while here on the mountain was sunshine above the clouds, which indeed presented a beautiful sight. Descending the Mountain side a short distance and extending your hand the moisture in the clouds is clearly perceptible. Such a scene may never occur in years. Grandpa and Mary Peacock. H. J.
