A ttention of horse owners of the eastern side of the county is called to the advertisement of the Oillain Live Stock Association, in anotheu place. It will there be seen that this company have reduced the —prices of the services of their well known and highly reputed horses to absolute “rock-bot-tom.” There is surely no excuse for people in that section raising scrubs when the use of such excellent animals can be secured at such very low prices.

The Kentland Gazette of last weak gave a pretty full summary of the evidence in the UlreV trial. One noteworthy point not heretofore mentioned by The Repi islican was that the Smoots were willing to drop the prosecution, if Ulrey would consent to put up SSOO. Much of the evidence tended strongly to establish the position taken bv Ulrey V friend-, namely that Smoot’s demonstrations, had been of so mysterious ami menacing a character, as, very naturally, to have raised in Ulrcy’s mind the belief that Smoot was meditating his death. Plenty of good men testified as to Ulrey’s previous good character. The Gazette probably echoes public opinion in Newton county in its evident S3'mpathy with Ulrey, although we can not sec that its natural sympathies in direction could in any degree, justify such an unfair attack upon a witness whose testimony was unpalatable, as it make? upon Win. Wood, of Rensselaer, an important witness for the prosecution.
The Ciias. Guineas company, a comical combination, exhibited at the Opera House, Tuesday evening, to a small audience. A Billy goat was one of the ablest members of the combination. An incident of the visit of this company created a mild sensation in the town. They claimed, after their arrival, that two of their members had a hankering for matrimony,- and one of our most estimable ministers was solicited to come to the Opera House and perform the ceremony, immediately after the entertainment. This he goodnaturedly and not at all improperly consented to do, not having before his eye§ a due fear of the advertising instincts of the theater man, the world over, and in >all times. The next move of the manager, however was to get out hand-bills, not only announcing that the marriage was to take place, but giving the name of
the clergyman ‘ and stating that lie would he present at the entertainment. This being advertised as an extra attraction in a traveling comic show, was more, muchmoiv, than ministerial meekness ecu id endure, and the reverend gentleman not only withdrew his engagement to perform the ceremony, but he gave the monager a very forcible lecture on his reprehensible conduct in the matter. This discouraging set-back, and perhaps an unforeseen difficulty in raising two dollars for a mafriage license, was too much for the not very ardent matrimonial prosperities of the actors, and therefore no wedding took place. The advertising of the minister was a scurvy trick hnwever. but as he himself was entirely innocent in the matter, no just criticism can be passed upon him in connection witli it.
