Two prisoners, a white and a negro,werelynched at Gainesville, Fla., on the 18th,I for having committed numerous assaults. Floods have been devastating Pcnnsylm vania. The Republican majority in the Senate; after the 4th of March will only be four' and if Palmer is elected in Illinois it wil ■ be reduced to two. '• It is reported that a natural gas trust is' being formed, and that the action of the gas company at Columbus, 0., recently in* shutting off the supply on the plea that the wells were exhausted was partof aschemei to extort higher prices from consumers. ! The question has been raised over the. legality of Kyle's election to the United 1 States Senate. The claim is made that ai majority of all the members of the Legis-i lature is necessary, which would necessi-' tate Kyle’s receiving eightysflve votes whereas he received only seventy-five. The remains of the late Admiral Porter, the naval hero, were laid to rest with martial honors in Arlington Cemetery., Washington, on the 17th The pageant! was very imposing and participated in byl over 3,600 soldiers, marines and Grand Army men. The services were impressive, Tho President, Cabinet, and many othe. distinguished persons were present. Peace to his ashes.
The south bon nd limited passenger train on the Illinois Central railroad, which left Chicago at 8 ;20 p. m. on the 18th, jumped' the track at Medina, Tenn. The cars took fire and all were consumed except the rear sleeper, which was saved by the timely arrival of a freight train, the engine ofl which pulled it from the burning train. No one was killed* but the escape from eath of all on board was marvelous. Ed Silvertooth, the baggage man, an unknown man an 1 the newsboy were seriously injured .
