Barkley Items, A frost large enough to mp the corn blades last week. Alliance at Smith school house next Saturday night, and every two weeks thereafter. S. R. M. the usual time. John Ryan has sold his farm to Mr. Rite of Rensselaer. Leroy Florence received a severe sonstroke last Friday, but his friends are confident that he will recover. The stroke was a 10 pounder; i Miss Dora English returned from Washington state, last Saturday. She was accompanied by her sister Mrs. Jennie Brosnehan. Don Carlos.
From Gillam. The Basket Social, held at th e residence of T. H. Robinson, on Saturday night, was a success. The baskets were all sold, and the money given to the pastor Rev. Campbeik - —• The Misses Welch, of Jordan Tp., spent Sunday in Gillam. Mr. Phillips, of Rensselaer, made a flying trip to Gillam on Sunday. The lady visitor here from Kniman is supposed to be the cause of his visit. . Prof. Chas. Jaekel, Prof, of | music in South Chicago, spent Sunday with Laura E. Rathfon. Mr. Jaekel is a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Music, and is a very fine musician. Mr. Pies Pullens who had his leg broken a week ago, is slowly recovering. Annie Rooney. From wiicatffleld. Hay harvest is drawing to a close. We had whopping frost Friday morning. Frank Hathaway is painting the residence of Mrs. R. Clark occupied by Frank Scott. John Greve is erecting a residence in West Wheatfield. *
Alston Nichlos is building a small frame residence, in Bentley’s addition. S. J. Bentley has material for a new residence. Mr Bently has been in Chicago the past week adding new goods to his already large stock on hand. Alonza Hayes, of Kansas city, Kan., is making an extended visit here, to his many relatives and friends. There was sale of levied goods at the residence of John Misch last Saturday. The sale was largely attended by Chas Similey the auctioneer and Clerk Similey says he had a picnic for once in his life. Old Ironside.
West teuton. Threshing is almost through with us this year in these parts. J. E. Roberts recently from California has been sick with typhoid fever. Dx. Loughridge is waiting on him. *> Oats are worth 36 cents at Julian and Foresman. Our neighboring town of Brook claims to have the champion base ball club in the north part of the State. Mr. Jesse Saylor is contemplating taking a trip to Wisconsin soon, visiting relations near Madison. Henry Shipman is adding to his very productive farm a part of the river bottom which overflows every year and is therefore a very rich piece of land. He has inclosed it with a levee mile long and Bto 10 feet high. He predicts it to be 2 feet above high water mark. Remington Fair is the principal excitement in these parte this week. Billy Bnngle’s new house is almost completed. P. F. Roberts has the finest water-melon patch m the Township. He has lota of friends now. A Cubtis Creeker. Rensselaer Public Schools. 1 The public schools of Rensselaer •will be open next Monday, Sept Ist ! at 8:30 A. M. Parents will be giving their children superior advantages by sending them the first day, as they will then be present at the classification of the school. By the decision of the Supreme Court of Indiana concerning school books, the new books known as the Indiana Educational Series, and published by The Indiana School Book Company, and .none other will haye to be used. Parents can get these books before next Monday, as each child knows what books he needs, and by so doing will avoid delay. The new books are Reader, Geographies, Arithmetics, and Copy-books, all other books will be the same as those used before. Books have been put into the hands of J. E. Spitler, at post office. Catalogues of the school can be had at the County treasurer’s office of Mr. Clark, or of Mr. Chilcote, Mr. Willey, or the Superintendent at their respective places of business.
