THE CLOSE OF THE INSTITUTE.
, The Teachers’ Institute reached a . total atendance of 140, before the closing day, Among the notable features of the 'week were Prof. Bryan’s interesting and most scholarly lecture, Thursday evening, on the subject "The Mortal-Immortal,” 1 which WAS attended by a crowded: audience; and on Friday evening the annual Teachers’ Reunion. Among the features of the Reunion were brief addresses by Profs. Bryan and Gh Arman, some- excellent elocutionary performances by Prof. Thompson of Terre Haute, and an original poetic story, by Miss Grace Nichols, “good enough to print.” Some important resolutions, adopted by the Institute, are here given: We, the committee on resolutions, beg leave to submit the following to the teachers of Jasper county, in the Institute assembled: Whereas, teachers’ meetings and associations are among the chief agencies in elevating the teaching profession and stimulating a love for pedagogical studies: | Resolved* , that we favor a Joint i Institute of one day of all the townships of Jasper county, called by the County Superintendent at the time ( and place he may designate during , the current school year, j That we petition the township trustees to allow the day spent in I Joint Institute to take the place of a 1 regular township Institute. Whereas, some Trustees have refused or failed in time past to pay their teachers for attending the township Institute: j Resolved, that we respectfully demand all just allowance due us. Whereas, the teachers of Jasper county, generally, have not been allowed a Janitor fee. Resolved, that we present our : claims-for such fee to the trustees of ' our respective townships. Whereas, the leading educators of T the State have inaugurated a systematic course of reading for young people. j Resolved, that we as Teachers of Jasper county exert our influence to follow out this course. ! As an appreciation of the work ; done this week in the Institute by : Prof. Wm Bryan and Prof. A. R. Gharman: Resolved, that we extend to them our thanks.
