A Sad and Fatal Accident.
Last Friday, at Hammond, James Ropp, a former well known resident of Rensselaer, met with an accident, which caused his death. He was working at carpentering, and assisting to erect a high staging at an old building when a four inch square timber, 20 feet long, 'which had been erected on end and a board cross>iece nailed to the upper end, fell and struck Mr. Ropp on the head, with such force as to crush his skull. He lived until the next day, but did not regain consciouness. He happened to stand just where what was the upper end of the timber struck him, as it fell, and thus got the full force of the terrible blow. The remains were brought to Rensselaer and the funeral was held Siiilday afternoon, at the residence of* the deceased’s brother, Andrew, in Miss Monnett’s residence, across the river. Rev. T. F. Drake conducted the funeral services. The deceased was about 32 years old, and a rugged and powerful man. He leaves a widow, danghter of T. J. Borem, also a former resident of Rensselaer, and four young children. Another man was working with Mr. Ropp and was struck by Ihe falling stick but not seriously hurt The deceased’s family is left in bad condition financially, and the people of Hammond have generously contributed to a purse for their benefit The amount contributed was SIOO at last accounts, and likely to be much increased. ; *
