State Finances

A statement has been prepared by Auditor of State Carr, showing the condition of the State’s finances. It shows the sum of $783,000 in the treasury on July 1 in the general fund. From this there was paid $60,000 in salaries, and the balance must be applied to pay an interest account falling due, $137,000; the running expenses of the State institutions for six months, $392,000; balance of specific appropriations, $167,000 ; money appropriated for improvements in penal and reformatory institutions, $53,000; a* mount due the State universities, $23, 000, making a grand total of $832,000, and leaving a deficit of $49,500. This deficit is due to the Democratic Legislature making appropriations and not providing for an increase in the revenue.
