The closing exercises at the Indian School were held Tuesday afternoon, and quite a number of Rensselaer people were present, on invitation. The exercises consisted of declamations, recitations, songs <kc., and also of original papers. One of these la?t by the 3'oung chief Oshkosh, on the subject of‘.‘The Indian;” was a notably able production and was very highly commended by all who heard it.' Prizes for the best and second best scholars were given, through the liberality of Messrs. Jno, Eger and F. B. Meyer. After the literary exercises there were athletic games and dancing, both in Indian and modern fashion. The excellent cliaraeter of the literary exercises reflect great credit upon Father Hahn, the director of the institution, and his able and zealous assistants, for their great efforts in behalf of the veiy difficult and not entirely tractable subjects under their charge.
The Schumann Quartette gave two concerts at the M. E. Church last Thursday and Friday evenings. The quartette consisted of two tenor, one bass and one baritone singers. A noted elocutionist, Miss Starr, came with the Quartette aud interspersed the music with realistic recitations. The quartette was the best that ever struck the town ami considering the low price of admission the attendance was very small. The first evening the house was exceedingly small, but the second evening it was some bettor. The quartette produced sentimental and humorous songs and were met with great applause by all present. Miss Starr, the elocutionist, produced two of her G. A. R. selections, one each evening, which of course* were of great interest to the old soldiers: The members of the company are all young, averaging between 25 aud 30 years of age. Mias Starr is a young lady of more than ordinary powers as a speaker and took well with all the audience.
