Another Fire.
Last Saturday morning at 1 o’clock the night watchman. Mr. Myers discovered lire in' the tailor shop of F. Zugbaum, on the north side of Washington street. Mr Myers promptly gave the ala tin, and soon the clang of bells and shriek of the whistle at the electric plant, roused our people from their slumbers, who come rushing from all parts of the town in all kinds of light summer attire tO see the fire.
The fire company got out their engine promptly, but the fire was subdued before they reached it, by a few of . our resolute citizens dashing in plenty of water. It is tire opinion of those best qualified to judge that ten minutes more deby, would have rendered it impossible to have saved
j any of the wooden buildings in the : block. The fire was the work of arr 1 incendiary, who entered the building .from the rear, by removing a pane of glass from the window, the glass was found unbroken In an adjoining shed. In the front room were about §6OO worth of clothes and famishing g< m >ds. In this room a kerosene lamp shad been left burning, setting on the j counter. The chimney to. the lamp was found unbroken on the floor, the wick liad been pulled out of the the lamp and two thirds of the oil poured out, presumably onto the clothes to start the fire. The fire in the front room had gained Sufficient head way to entirely consume several pieces of cloth, and ! was burning the wood work of jthe drawers and shelving. A few minutes more it would have broken out i and been beyond control. Mr. Zugbaum’s loss on stock is about §2OO, covered by insurance in the “Dome of New York.” Ralph Fendig, owner of the building, loss §IOO, insured. This is the second incendiary* fire started in our town within a week. If the warning sound - ed by the Republican last week had been acted upon, this second fire could have been prevented. Prompt and effective action now, may- prevent a terrible and disasterous conflagration. Some trouble has been experienced by Mr. Zugbaum, in getting the insurance money on his loss, as after singing a paper of settlement for §250, the Insurance company refufes to settle for more than §2OO. It is understood that suit will be commenced to recover the loss.
