The matter of the Poor Farm.
The Grand Jury, on March 17th, 1890, filed a report commending the management of the jail and criticising the conduct of Shelby Grant, manager of the poor farm. They returned no indictment under Sec. 2039, which was the only thing the grand jurors were authorized to do. The report was certified to the Board of Commissioners on May 13, 1890, and on Monday the Board entered the following order: _ . . No. 8153. In matter of report of Grand Jury.
In so far as the order of Circuit Court made March 17, ’9O, and filed with the Auditor May 13, ’9O, reading as follows: (insert) refers to the Jail the same is approved and so far as the same refers to the asylum for the poor, the Board finds no statute authorizing any action on such report. The Board is willing to hear and determine all matters within their jurisdiction in reference to the matter of managing the ppor asylum, whether such jurisdiction be conferred by law, on complaint, or by agreement, and sets tins matter down ; for further bearing at 10 o’clock a. in., on June Gth, 1890. at which time all complaints will be heard and the Auditor is ordered to notify the Sup- | erintendent of such hearing and re- ! quest him to appear and make answer.herein. if he so desires.
The contract with Shelby Grant, expires on March 8, ’9O. This contract requires him do care for the inmates well and according to law. It is understood that he will appear tomorrow and that the Board of Cora, missioners will make proper orders to correct any real grievances. Not a. 'member of the Board of Commissioners but what wants the poor well cared for who are at the asylum. If any one knows of a better way to mafiage it. let him come forward tomorrow forenoon and give his views to the Board. Or if any person knows or thinks he knows of any actual abuse or negligence, or any thing that needs correcting in the management of the county poor asylum, and the treatment of its inmates, now is the time to come forward, in a manlr way, r.:id tell what he knows.
