Robbing the Government.
Washington Special N. Y. Son. Senator Vest said in the Senate a few days ago that it seems to be nothing but human nature for people to endeavor to get money from the Government by fair means or foul. The truth of this saying is exemplified every day. „ Washington boarding house keepers are reputed to be more avaricious in their demands than any class of citizens, but they will have to yield the prize for bills to a livery stable keeper, who had a little account against the Senate one day last week, and who has it yet. Some time ago this person supplied five carriages to take members of the Committee on Naval Affairs to the navy yard on a matter of public business. The party were absent from the Capital a little more than an hour and a half For this serviee the owners of the carriages sent a bill to the committee for $45, or $9 for each carriage. It so happened that Senator Stockbridge of Michigan was acting Chairman of the committee when the account was sent in. He is used to having big bills presented, but this one rather staggered him, and he refused to approve it. He drew his pen through the item of carriage hire, and sent word that when a bill of something like reasonable proportions was sent in it might, be paid. He thinks that $5 an hour* for ordinary livery stable hacks is a little steep. -
