IMPORTANT DECISIONS.

The United States Supreme Court on the 19th rendered an opinion holding to be unconstitutional the law of Minnesota requiring that all fresh meats sold in the State shall be cut from animals slaughs tered within the State and inspected twenty-four hours before slaughter. Opinion by Justice Harlan: no dissent. The basis of the decision is that the act is an infringment of the freedom of interstate commerce. A decision of great importance to Mor mons was also handed down. The Ed*, munds law escheated, to the United Statesman real estate held by the church in excess of $50,000, which was not on the date of the passage of the act held for the* purposes of worship or burial. The Mormons wanted the aet deolared unconstitutional and entered suit with this end in view. The territorial court decided in favor of the United States, and the U. S. Supreme Court sustains this decision. An opinion was also rendered affirming the judgment of the circuit court of the United States for the Western district of Arkansas in favor of the South Kansas railroad company against the Cherokee nation. The Cherokees .contended that an act of Congress granting the railroad com. pany rights of way through the Indian territory was void on the ground that the United States had not the right of eminent domain over her territory. The court does not agree with this.
