Ail Workmen Asked to Refrain from Strikes Until the Carpenters Win. , The general executive board of ths American Federation of Labor held a protracted executive session at New York. Monday afternoon, and issued a manifesto signed by President Gompers. Aftei denouncing all who do not yield to hta viewß as enemies of those who work,’ Mr Gompers closes thus? ‘■The executive council of the American Federation of Labor having selected tb* United Brotherhood of Carpenters anj Joiners of America to make | the djjgtdnd for the enforcement of the eight-houi work day, I ask you to refrain from any sympathetic strikes —rather remain at your work—and aid the carpenters and Joiners to win in the contest. To the carpenters and Joiners my . advice is to ue mand and insist upon the enforcement of the eight-hoar work day. It is not a matter of theory; it is a positive fact that the question of wages and conditions will regulate themselves, and to. your benefit as soon as the eight-hour work day has been in operation. FortJjat reason, ifyotf cannot secure the eight-hour work ..day with other conditions, then allow tlfcm to remain open for future adjustment. . •. s _ “In the demonstrations to be hekfc May % turn out in vast numbers, and by /yaw presence manifest your nnalterable determination to have the eight hour work dS$ enforced, though by one trade at a yet for all as the ultimate result. Altow no one to provoke yon to a breach of t&s peace. Maintain order, refrain from ik violence, engage in no riots, let the watelp word bo the enforcement of the work day, firm, peaceable and pog.tive.
