The Bible In the Schools.

Philadelphia Inquirer.. Wisconsin and Nevada are the only two States having constitutional provisions against sectarian instruction, but there has been much litigation on the subject in other States. In 1854 the Maine Supreme Court decided the matter against the recusant Catholics. In Massachusetts it was held that children in the public schools must listen to the reading of the Bible, but any child may be excused at the request of its parents. The famous Cincinnati case, which lasted from 1869 to 1872, was a question simply of the right of school to decide pro and con in the selection of the Bible as a text-book. The matter was once before the Supreme Court of Illinois, but was decided on a defect in the pleading. In lowa it was held that there was no objection to Bible reading in public schools, as it is not religious instruction. The Wisconsin case came to the Supreme CourCon the appealjof certain Catholics of Edgerton, was objected to King James’s version. The Circuit Court decided against them, but was overruled by the Supreme Court.
