ANTI-PROHIBITION.
lowa Republicans Meet and Demand lots Option. The anti-prohibition movement within the Republican party that has made such headway slhce the last election,culminated in a State convention at Des Moines. Wednesday, 196 delegates, representing twenty-five counties, being present. They stood for several thousand Republicans at home, who hold their views. At the opening session Mr. George M. Hubbell, of Davenport, was elected temporary chairman. He delivered as address, in which he said that he had been a life long prohibitionist, and had done all in his power to enforce the prohibitory law In his city,and failed. He was ready now to ask the legislators for some relief for communities where prohibition is a failure. Ex-Gov Kirkwood sent a letter saying that he was in favor of local option and high license. Joseph Collins, of Keokuk, was ohosen permanent chairman, He said he had been a prohibitionist but was now convinced that prohibition was a failure, and wanted local option and high license. Resolutions were adopted declaring the allegiance of the delegates to the Republican party; declaring that prohibition has proved a failure; opposing constitutional prohibition; demanding local option and high license, and demanding that the indorsement of prohibition in the party platform be stricken out The House spout the afternoon in committee of the whole considering the C.mocratio bill whioh provides local option and a minimum license of S3OO.
