ABOUT MARION TOWNSHIP TEACHERS.
Inasmuch as a certain gentleman’s Unreasonable prejudice against Trustee Wm. Greenfield has caused the teachers of Marion township to be given an unkind and unjust slur in a newspaper, a few words in regard to the said teachers will not be out of place. There are twelve schools in Marion tp., under the care of the township trustee. These schools are small in number of pupils and the trustee has but little more money for their support than does, for instance, the trustee of Gillam tp., for the support of only half the number of schools. Under these circumstances the terms of the schools are necessarily short, and the teachers’ wages not of the highest, and no reasonable person can expect that all of the ■ schools of the township can be supplied by teachers of many years’ successful experience, and consequently commanding the- highest salaries. With these facts in view we present the names of the teachers employed , by Mr. Greenfield during the present season: Alice Henkle, Mary Harrison,Nellie Kelley, Dema Hopkins, Laura Hodshire, Grace Vannatta, Edie., Wilson, Adda M. Chilcote, Mary Adams, Adda Bruce, Carrie Welsh and Mary Shindler. All but; two of these have had at least one I year’s previous experience in teaching, and at least four of them are teachers of upwards of four years ' successful experience. All but one ! have licenses for at least a year, and ' some have two years, and all have comparatively high standing in their ■ examination grades. We may add also that we have Superintendent: Warren’s statement that he believes • that the schools of Marion tp., are as ) well taught as any in the county, on ' the average, and further that if any j complaints have been made by patrons they have not reached him. As to the teachers employed the previous year by Mr. Greenfield, it is sufficient to say that they included such excellent teachers as Lizzie Faris, Mattie Fans, Arilla Warren and Chas. Ham- I mond, all with two year licenses and Lee Glazebrook, with a three years license. Two of Mr. Greenfield’s former teachers are now teaching in the town schools of Rensselaer. Considering the amonut of money at his disposal Mr. Greenfield has done marvelously well in securing such good teachers for the schools under his care.
