FORTY THROATS CUT.
The steamship La Place, which left Rio Janeiro January 3, arrived at New York Wednesday morning. First Mate Chase said: “There is no flag which is recognized 1 throughout the country, and the people of each province have a flag of their own. In December last forty sailors employed on Brazilian men-of-wars went ashore and shouted ‘Viva l’Emperor,’ and subsequent* ly had their throats cut for their enthusiasm. “There was an English vessel in port there loading coffee and flying a Brazilian! Empire flag. Orders were issued to pul); down the flag, but the coffee was loaded and the old flag floated until she was ready to leave port Things are' not aa serious there as some people say they are,” said Mr. Chase.
