Disgusted With the System.
Evansville Journal. It is an ungracious task and not popular* but somebody ought to say it. Look at the men who ordinarily compose our Legislatures and even Congress. Fellows are elected who couldn’t pass a high school examination to save their lives. They couldn’t borrow a hundred dollars in any well regulated bank. Yet, because they are popular; because some use money and others pose as friends oL. the dear people, they are elected, while men of real talent, who would honor their constituents and legislate intelligently for the public weal, are ignored. Is it any wonder that laws are enacted that are unconstitutional and in contravention of justice? The whole system of nominating and electing legislators ought to be changed. Instead of putting forward “popular fellows,’’botli parties ought to nominate men of reai ability, so as to prevent such calamities as frequently come on the people through ignorant and corrupt legislation.
