Cigars a Recent Addition.

The use of cigars by civilized people is much more recent than most people suppose. The real cigar, which is a pure roll of tobacco alone, probably originated in Cuba, Where the very best cigars are still made. If not there it was undoubtedly in one of the West India Islands. Their origin with us, as in Europe, did not begin until the present century. It is said that of all the various cook books published between 1800 and 1815, and books which treat of the pleasures and adjuncts of taste before tbc last named date, not one refers to the after-dinner cigar or to cigars at all. Cigars are now made ail over the civilized world. They are produced very extensively in Bremen and Hamburg, and at Seville, in Spain. But at Manila, in the Philippine Islands, the largest factories are to be found, in some of which I§,ooo girls are employed.
