Webster as a Financier.

Ix:wiston Journal. Daniel Webster once found' a good way of getting rid of a borrower. “Webster,” sa 5 d Rufus Choate, “I want to borrow SSOO, and I wish you’d lend it to me.” “I haven’t the money to-day, Mr. Choate,” said Webster, “but you give me your note and I can get it cashed for you.” Gratified beyond measure Choate sat down to wi ite his note. “By the way, Choate,” said Webster, in an off-hand way, “you might as well make that note for $1,000; I can use SSOO myself.” “Certainly,” said Choate, cheerfully, and he signed a note for an even SI,OOO. Then the immortal Daniel gauntered down to a banker’s office. “Can you discount a note for SI,OOO for me?” “With pleasure,” said the banker. The great statesman pocketed SI,OOO in bills, gave SSOO to Choate, who was effusive in his thanks, and kept SSOQ himself.
