“General Harrison will start for Washington next Monday, and one week from that day will be inaugurated President of these United States. Selah! The ball-beaded Bourbon bulldozers are rushing the Andrews election bill through the State Legislature with no chance for .amendment and little more for argument than they allow for the half dozen other more distinctly partisan measures which now absorb their almost exclusive attention. The bill possesses some good features, but is so Cumbersome and complicated and above all so unnecessarily expensive that it is morally sure to be repealed or radically amended by the next Legislature. Every intelligent and patriotic American citizen has been sick at heart, for years, whenever he reflected over the nation’s wholly inefficient navy and <%skst To all such* what has been done during the last half dozen years toward remedying these deplorable deficiencies has been -a source of much catiou. Astor years of entreaty and argument Congress at last inaugurated, a course of action which has already given the nation several excellent naval vessels of modern construction, and the promise of mauy others still'letter in the future. In the matter of big guns, too, there is at last a probability that this country will, before many years, be put on an equality with other nations of the earth. As the matter stands at, present tne cannons possessed by this country compare with those of such nations as Germany, France and Great Britian about as favorably as would a flint-lock musket of Revolutionary times compare with a imxiern repeating rifle, of the most approved pattern. But this shameful condition of affairs is at last to be remedied. The government is about to erect a great gun factory at the Watervleit arsenal, where everything will be devoted to the making of heavy ordinance of the most powerful kind. In this connection iT is gratifying to note that the successful trial of the big cast-steel gun, at the Annapolis proving grounds, last week, is an almost conclusive indication that the ever fertile Yankee genius has discovered a way of making the largest and most powerful and most servicable of cannon at a cost vastly less and in a much shorter time, than by ihe methods which prevail ip Europe.
Outragèus Methods of Democracy
The following dispatch in reference to a prominent business man of Fowler, appeared in the Indianapolis Journal, last Monday: Fowu&b, Feb. 16.—Through the scoundrelly methods adopted by the democrats of this county, Mr.
O. 0. Brockway was compelled to make an assignment to-day, of his stock of merchandise. ic perjruers had him inducted in the federal court and then' reported to the wholesale men that Brockway was about to fail, thus causing them to close in on him. The most damnable schemes have been put forth here to crush Mr. Brockway.
Roasting.
Ix>KSuiH]<drt Journal, Cyrus Smith, a former resident of this city, and one of the most prominent school-book men in the country, tells a good one to illustrate the position of the Third Party Prohibtionists. According to the story, ft man was quoted as retailing the information that he had dreamed he had died and had been transported to the realms of his satanic majesty, the devil, and the things he saw and heard there. “Did you see any politicians there?” asked an interested listener to the weird narative. “Lots of ’em,” was the reply. “Any Republicans?” “Few.” '‘Democrats?” “Good many.” “Third Party Prohibitionists?” “LotsT “How were the Republicans standing it?” “Not very well*; they were receiving pretty severe punishment for misdeeds done in the flesh.” “How about th 6 Democrats?” “Oh, they were enjoying themselves first rate.” “And the Prohibitionists?” “They were simply roasted.” “How’s that?” “Well, you see the Democrats held the Prohibitionists up between themselves and the fire.”
A Friendly Warning.
The Indianapolis Sun, an independent paper with Democratic leanings, writes a strong indictment against the majority in .the State Legislature as follows: “The democratic majority in the Indiana Legislature is doing what if can to injure its party;'“disgrace the State and bring down eternal .damnation on itself. Nearly half of the legislative days have passed, and nothing lias been done save the passage of partisan” matters. Fat offices at outrageous salaries have been made and filled by democrats, and assaults have been made upon the salaries of offices held by Republicans. The Democrats seem to have but'one purpose in view, that of making political plans unprofitable to Republicans. They are endeavoring to take from the governor all appointive power, and vest it jn the Legislature. Not one law so far has been passed that is of vital interest or benefit to the people. In such action the democrats are making a grave and serious mistake. They mistake the temper of the people. They are making republican voters every day, and they are paving the way to permanent republican control of .. the State.. They are doing that which will disgust every fair minded aud honest citizen of the State. They forget 'that tlley are in office to legislate fairly and justly for democrat and repul)lican alike, and when they shape their actions for partisan purposes they disgrace themselves, outrage the people, make the State, jan object of ridicule. If they believe that such action will receive indorsement by the people they are much in error.”
Activity in Reai-Estate. an Evidence of Prosperity.
Our greatly esteemed contemporary, the Monticello Herald, in speaking of the transactions in real estate in White county says:. “The transfers of real estate entered for record at the .Recorder’s office last week exceeded in number any previous weens record for five years past 'lhe activity in the real estate market is very noticable and indicates a season of prosperity in all lines for White county this year.” We congratulate our friends of The Herald on this discovery of evidence of prosperity, and for the sake of illust amg the growth anil prosperity of our own county will say that the week’s transactions in White county real-estate which The Herald so justly regards as an evidence of awakening prosperity, would only be regarded as a good average showing in this county. The total number of the transfers for the week alluded to by the Herald as given by that paper itself, is 25, and of those 8 are sheriff’s deeds. By way of comparison, we give the number of transfers in Jasper county for the past five weeks: For the week ending Jan. 19,the number was 33. For weekending Jan. 26, the number was 27. For week ending Feb. 2, the number was 17. For the week ending Feb. 9, it was 20. For the week ending Feb. 16, the number was 16. And nary a sheriff’s deed in the whole five weeks. The average for the five weeks is nearly 23, or only 2 less than for the phenomenal week, in White couhty, and 5 better than
that, if from the Herald’s list we deduct the 8 sheriff *s deeds, which would be no more than fair, for instruments of that nature are mighty poor evidence of prosperity- ' ..
Death of Swaney Makeever.
The long expected demise of D. S. Makeever occurred early last Sunday morning, at his residence on Division street. His disease first manifested itself, by a stroke of apoplexy. From this he finally rallied to some extent, but a second stroke in January was followed by softening of the brain, with its inevitable termination in death. His age was 60 years, 4 months and 16 days. He was born in Green county, Penn., and was removed to Ohio when 2 years old, with his parents, and with them to Jasper county in 1845, where he has ever since resided. | He was marrie'd in 1853 to Catherine A. Cunningham, whose death preceded his, a few years. His funeral was held at the F. W. Baptist church yesterday, at 10 A. M., Rev.B. F. Ferguson preaching the funeral sermon. He was buried after the rites of the order of Odd Fellows, an honored member of which* he was for many years. Ttvo sons and one daughter survive.him, and were all present at his funeral. . V’i Imitative Crow. A Maine correspondent writes: “Uncle Frank, our neighbor, had a tame crow of which lie was fond, and that fondness was reciprocated so that the crow was quite sure td Be - strutting and chattering near his owner Whenever the latter was out of doors. Uncle Frank was also a very methodical man, the boys saying that he clipped the tops of any pea vine that grew an inch above its fellows. Be that as it may, his garden was as regular and’ exact as it could well be. One day Uncle Frank was thinning his carrots, and the crow, as usual, was Inot far off, but receiving no special attention. When the owner had finished Lis first long row and turned to view the result he found that the chattering bird was at his heels and had pulled every carrot which had been left.” . „ , t .
