The big dance to be held at Washington on the night of M arch 4th might well be rechristened the “Inaugural Brawl,” in view of the great row that has been made over it by the *’oooo guid.” We take mighty little stock in the danceand none at all in the kick against HHL'- *** Last Tuesday was the 35th annivereary of the entrance into the printing business of E. Zimmerman, editor of the Valparaiso Messenger. Zim is a bold, bad and bitter Bourbon bin ail excellent newspaper man, for all that We know no neater nor newsier newspaper than the Messenger. There is mighty little hope for anything in the nature of temperlance legislation, from the democratic body which convenes at Indianapolis, to-day. It is just however, that the very I general demand, all over the state, for the repeal of the law which restricts cities and towns from charging more than one hundred dollars a year, for saloon licenses, will be acceded to. The'collapse of the Panama Canal scheme has been positively announced many times, since work 0:1 that great enterprise was begun, five or six years ago, but we notice that money still flows in ; and work still goes oh. The company now is, indeed, in a very desperate strait, but even yet, the work still goes on at full swing. The fact is, the French people have invested too much money in the enterprise to allow it to fail now. The canal will be be completed sometime, without doubt, but at a cost too great to ever pay any fair return for the money in- _ _ 1 !_J.!!—J The President has withdrawn the nomination of Leon O. Bailey to be district attorney for Indiana. This act is a virtual confession that the nomination was an unfit one. Solomon Claypool, whose name has been substituted for ÜBailay’s, is a reputable man and a 'good lawyer, thus being an uui measurable improvement over Bailey, but it is not likely that the ■Senate will confirm the nomination as Claypool is a bitter partisan, and moreover, it is felt that Mr. Mteveland ought to extend to Mr. Harrison the same courtesy as liras extended t» Mr. CleveBand by President Arthur, namely to refrain from making nomina»mis to important Federal offices, Dear the end of his term, so far as gpracticable, and leave the offices for his successor to fill. _ Why- is it that the Township in Jasper county have Kyftr complied with the plain Mandate of the law which directs Hbm to sejt asidece rtain days in each week or month in which to Intend to the business of the r Wees, and to duly advertise the lame? The law is plain and un-
equivocal, and we do not know of a single county anywhere, - except’ Jasper, where it is not complied with by the Trustees. As the matter now stands, the only trustee in Jasper county who complies with this law is Mr. Roadifer, of Carpenter township, who has designated his days of business aud keeps n notice o( the same in the. columns of the Remington News. The Revised Statutes of 1881 give the law in regard to the matter as follows: “
of business. Township Trustees shall designate certain days in each week or month, as may be required, in which he will attend to the business of his township and cause notice thereof to be gixen to inhabitants of such township and all contracts, auditing and payments of claims shall be made’ only on such designated days.” The fact of the matter is, as a careful reading of the above section will show, trustees who do not comply with this law, have no real legal right to make contracts, or to audit and pay claims, for their respective townships, aud there is little doubt but if the matter was to be brought’to a test the actions of such trustees in those respects would be illegal and not binding upon the townships.
Circuit Court.
The Grand Jury began work Monday, and is still grinding. All of the original panel, except J, T. Culp, are present His place was Tilled by Thomas Thompson, of Rensselaer, who was made foreman. In the circuit court a big fight against the proposed Davidsion ditch, was finally compromised, so that opposition was withdrawn, and the ditch was ordered to be constructed. Mrs. Rebecca Ann Patton, ot Remington, obtained a divorce from Barney Patton, on the grounds of abandonment She resumes her widow’s name, Timmons. < A considerable number of j udgements by default were entered, and several decrees of foreclosure issued. The Petit Jury is mot called until next week. <

The unfortunate lady was confined in the asylum for several months, some years ago, and was released as cured, but an attack of sickness again brought on her mental disease.
