SECRETARY LAMONT’S SUCCESSOR.
A Few Facta Concerning Mr. E. W. Halford Whom General Harrison Has Honored , With title Appointment of Private Secretary. Lafayette Courier. The position of Private Secretary to the President is one of great honor and responsibility, and from the very nature of things, he sustains more intimate and confidential relations with the Chief Executive than any other officer in the government. ~ Col. Daniel Lamont, who has distinguished himself as Privatejseeretary to Mr. Cleveland, was originally a newspaper man, and he is to be succeeded in the White House by a gentleman who has won renown as a working journalist Mr. E. W. Halford has received the appointment of Private Secretary to Gen. Harrison, and has already entered upon the discharge of his duties. Mr. Halford is about forty-five years of age, prematurely gray, but well preserved, considering the immense amount of labor he has performed at hours when ordinary mortals were asleep and at rest. He came to this country from England as a child, and from early boyhood had to struggle for existence. He entered the newspaper business as carrier boy, compositor, to various positions on the editorial staf£ until he became managicg editor, a position he held on the Indianapolis Journal for many yeais and for a time on the Chicago inter Ocean. Among other accomplishments, he is a shrewd politician, and has shown his foresight and excellent judgment in the construction of party platforms and in other ways where prudence and delicate discrimination were necessary to meet requirements and avoid embarrassing complications. For many years he has been on terms of intimate friendship with the Presidentelect, and the latter is to be congimhlatedou his good fortune in searing an | assistant who is so well qualified 1 to meet: the exacting requirements of the position to which he has been so jvorthily promoted. Mr. Halford is an indefatigable worker, and is a gentleman of the : strictest integrity ai;d r ‘Christian I character. He is a member of' the Methodist church, and occas-; lonally occupies the puipit as an ' expounder of the gospel. By his ! own exertions he has worked him- > self up from the ranks, and has well earned the distinguished hon-; or that has been conferred japon ! him: -He is marfied, ahd is the father of and : accomplished :Jeannette, who is now ip Cbl!s*(•£ Like many professional Halford’s ■ penmanship ■is not calculated to excite admiration from an artistic standpoint, but he .writes rapidly and his English clean-cut and vigorous. Mr. Halford is too well! balanced to be classed as an extremist, but he is a relentless foe of intemperance. This is in part due, no doubt, to natural inclination aud early training, but those familiar with the circumstances can easily understand his bitter opposition to alcohol in every form. During the war the three bFothuy8 T Eh-iah,.James and Willie, were all working on the Journal, the two last named being carriers. The boys were all industrous and devoted to their widowed mothei. Willie was the youngest and the general favorite. One morning when it was quite dark, while Willie was delivering the Journal to subscribers, n drunken gambler staggered out of a saloon and fired his pistol into the darkness. The bullet struck Willie Halford iu the head, and the little fellow was carried home dead! It is no wonder that this elder brother despises rum, and his whole nature turns to storm when the dreadful scene of his brother’s death is recalled. The air is thickened with Holiday goods, at the Post-Office.
