THE BANES CASE.

Editor Republican:—Some of yoii" readers may read with interest the following facts touching tile attempt in March last to inii ;te. the currency at Goodland. At the time a Canadian imitail'ou of our §5 silver certificates was found to have been made by one •l.ihusou, near Sarnia, in Ontario, Canada, who is now serving a term prison, having been tried and senlenced last month. The certificates wbre started by Ben McKinsey, Aiex Brownlee and Charles Parson, who are also serving sentence the. efur. About the first of March John H. Banes received a sample from Brownlee. On March 10 for a consideration of §l5O forty of these spurious certificates came by mail. James Sapp, another clerk of William Banes was a partner 411 the transaction with John Banes. This §2OO went off lirlkp ’‘hot cakes.” On March 14, McKinzie brought to Goodland §2,000 more of the counterfeits fur which he received §1,600. To pay for this Banes and Sapp borrowed §SOO of Win. Banes, §4OO of the Goodland Bank, §250 of Dr. Pratt, and §IOO of Dr. Traugh. But the product of cheap labor got too plenty. Some of the “pictures” went into Wm. Banes’ money drawer and many of them into the bank On the 21st the bank learned how to detect them, and so managed as to only lose §l4O, while Wm. Banes lost §7O; so at the end of thirteen days the cheap money dream of James and John had passed away. They were arrested oh the 22nd and sent to jail, a John gave bond for §IO,OOO and James for §5,000. In July Sapp sickened end died. In August John consented to testify against the Canadians, and on Nov. 9 fie cofessed to his brother William. In the mean time William was indicted also. On Nov. 23 John confessed his guilt in open court Tast Tuesday William was tried and acquitted by a jury. Not a guilty man escaped. 8. P. Thompson.
