Another Word about That Pole Rope.
f The fact that the removing of that Democratic pole, ip. Rensselaer last week, was, a part of a Democratic scheme to cause anger .against Republicans, has been I made so thoroughly manifest that the subject is a very sore one for Democrats. They say nothing about it themselves and would j much prefer that other people would follow their example in preserving silence on the subject’. As The Republican i a being published wholly with the view of pleasing the Democrats, at least this issue is not, we propose to make a few mild allusions to the affair, . For one thing we wish to call attention to one of the strongest 1 proofs.that it was a Democratic scheme. They never, intended to raise a flag on that pole. And here is the evidence which warrants that conclusion: Nearly all the residents of Rensselaer know from their own personal knowledge, that an attempt was made to raise the pole on the Friday before the rally, but the pole broke of its own weight before it could be raised. Now then we state what is an absolute fact, which dozens pFreputable men will .testify to be true, when we say that when the attempt was made to raise the pole , Friday, there teas no flag rope aitaehed io~ pt. They knew that the pole was not strong enough to sustain a flag and had made no provision for elevating onj upon it. But by the time they had patched up the’slender stick and got it ready for raising again. Saturday afternoon, they had devised the scheme about the. rope, and put it on the pole; for the sole purpose of stealing it off, again. Another fact worthy of mention in connection with this matter, is that the Democrats soon found out that their scheme was a boomerang. In the morning of the day of the rally they had out all their riff-raff and ruffians cursing the—
Republican who cut that rope, while the fine haired members of the: party were all bragging about th© number of votes the Republicans would lose on account of the incident. Before night both classes of Democrats had become sick'of the business and haven’t peeped about it since. > Still another fact, in connection with certain democratic falsehoods. They have stated that when the Republican committee offered to take dawn the pole, replace the rope and re-erect the pole, that W. T. Perkins, who ,raised the pole in the first place with his mounted derrick, said that he would not have time to get the pole up with the rope in it, by the time Voorhees was exepected to arrive. This statement is an out-and-out lie. Mr. Perkins repeal edly, in the hearing of Democrats and Republicans, and after the Republican committed had made its offer, guaranteed his readiness and abiility to take down aud reerect the pole by ■ the time Mr. Voorhees was expected to arrive.
