He has had charge of the office for a long time, as deputy, and the work of the place was never kept up in better, shape than it has been under, his management. The Republicans of Jasper Co. also owe it to the memory of that unflinching old Republican and true and honest man, Thomas Antrim, to give to his son I the unexpired term of the office to which the father was elected. The M. E.* church people have already secured and got the deed for an excellent location for their new church, even though they failed on the Barkley lots. They have bought of Miss Almira Monnett the two splendid lots on the east side of. Cullen street, cornering on Cordelia street just north of the Cotton lioueb? The lots are 100 feet front on Cullen street, by 150 feet .deep. The price paid was $450, a sum much below their' real value, considering their location and the fine new fence which surrounds , .them. In fact Miss Monnett would not have sold the lots for any other purpose, for less than SBOO. There could not be a better location for the church in the town, except for the one objection that it is so close to other churches, being just across the street from the Presbyterian’s building, and not much farther from the Baptists’. Work on the foundation will begin at once, and be pushed vigorously as long as the weather will permit.
A special train was sent out from Chicago, over the’> Monon route, last Sunday morning, to carry the Sunday Inter-Ocean to Indianapolis and intervening points. The train cnnsisted only of an engine and tender and one car. > It took out 15,000 copies of the paper, distributed half of them in towns along the line and reached Indianapolis with the other half. The train left Chicago at 3:23 o’clock and reached Indianapolis at 8:25. It made but few stops and ran at a terrific rate of speed. Between Lowell and the Kankakee river that rate was 65 miles an hour. From Rose Lawn to Fair Oaks 6 miles were made in 5 minutes. A. W. Cole, formerly of Rensselaer and J. H. Rynearson, of Fowler, were two of the three persons in charge of the papers on the train. The train did not-slack up at Rensselaer, but a bundle containing 115 papers was thrown oft The 16 miles from Rensselaer to Monon was made-- in 15 minutes, including a stop made for coal. Another special will be run next Sunday. 7 '
The Methodist people havobeen disappointed in their hope of securing a lot for their new church in the block belonging to the Henry Barkley estate, and. -which lies east of the public square and south of the Makeever House and The Republican building. The lots in the block were sold* last Saturday, and although the building committee of the church had a representative present, he was outbid in all cases by Mr. John Makeever, one &f the oldest and by far the wealthiest member of the church, and who, for reasons best known to himself, would not permit the church to secure a suitable location on the block. Members of the church and, the citizens of the town generally are greatly ■ disappointed, hot to Bft y indignant?, over the failure to secure one of
these desirable locations for the proposed building. The prices paid by Mr. Makeever for the lots purchased were, for the corner of Washington and Weston streets, 75 feet front on Washington street by 100 deep the price was 8730. For the next 75 feet west, of the same depth, $600.. For the two lots at the corner of Cullen and Haarieon and fronting on Cullen street, S9OO. All these prices were very much above the appraised value of the lots.
