Last fall a man was arrested for petty larceny, and sentenced by the Judge to three months in jail. A few days after the trial, the Judge, accompanied by the Sheriff, was on his way to the Boston boat,when they passed a : man sawing wood.

The sawyer stopped his work, touched his hat, and said: “Gfood morning;” Judge.” The Judge looked at him a moment, passed on a short distance, and then turned to glance backward with the question: “Why, Sheriff, isn’t that the man I sentenced to three months in jail?” “Yes,” replied the Sheriff, hesitatingly. “yes, that’s the' man.
