Charged with Criminal Assault.

Enos. Hibbs, a young married man who lives near Tefft, in Kankakee township, had a preliminary examination before Justice Morgan, last Saturday, charged with a criminal assault upon one Sarah A. Wood, a young woman of about 20 years of age. The act was alleged to have been committed on Monday, August 6, while the defendant was conveying the corn” plainant to his house, where she had engaged to work as a domestic. The girl alleged that Hibbs employed some violence and many direful threats, to accomplish his purpose. Hibbs in his testimony admitted criminal intimacy, but denied most positively to have used violence, or made threats. Plenty of good evidence was introduced by the defense which showed that the moral character of the girl would not pass inspection at a higher grade than “No, 2 Rejected" at best The Justice decided to bind the defendant over to the circuit court, in the sum of $500. The bail was promptly furnished by his uncle, Daniel H. Turner and his aunt, Mrs. Gray.
