BARKLEY ITEMS. Lizzie, daughter of Henry Nichols, died at her home on Saturday the 7th, inst, after a long and painful sickness, from consumption. Her age was about 16 years. S. R. Nichols’ fine Mew barn was struck by lightning on the 4th, and damaged to the amount of SIOO to S2OO. The recent heavy rains have badly damaged the oats crop in this vicinity. The crop is blown down, and many pieces will be almost a total loss. I. D. Walker lias the finest piece of corn in Barkley township. Major.
FROM WIIEATLIELD. " partners are not feeling in the best of spirits, owing to the late frequent showers. Mrs. Moliie Rogers lias been sick the last few days, but is convalescent. Harvesting is here, and many of the farmers will have to reap their grain with cradles, that otherwise would have used reapers had it not been for the heavy rains. Wlieatfield has just organized a base ball club. We hope it -will not prove so unsuccessful as the. one organized last summer. i, Fourth of JtfLr.—At Wheatfield the principal events of the day were a picnic given by “The Church of all Saints” and a bowery dance. Quite an assemblage of people had come from all the surrounding parts eager to see and be seen, and to exhibit their patriotic feelings. Though no flags could be seen floating in the breeze, we should doubt not but their patriotic” feelings were extinguished from view by the descending rains. Adrift.
FROM ANOTHER CORRESPONDENT. We are glad to say Wheatfield is able to have a meat market, owned by Hamilton & Clark. They are prepared to keep fresh meat at all times. Wheatfield rejoices over having a glorious 4th. The Ball was held in Geo. fetembcFe new store room. . Miss Addie Wood of W T abash Co,, is visiting friends at Wheatfield. The '’German’s of Wheatfield and vicinity are making arrangments to build a fine church, they are receiving bids. The boys of Wheatfield are organizing a drum corps. Mr. Wm. Evans of Stockton, Kans., is expecting to locate in Jasper Co. There will be a dance at Steim bel’s Hall Saturday July 21. V
REmXOTOS ITEMS. Owing to some unavoidable amb unforseen obstacle tho concert spoken of in our letter last week, lias been postponed for the present. Misses Anna and Kitty Parker accompanied Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Ford to Duluth, lasHveek. „ Fred L. Griffin of New York City, a former Remingtonian, is in town. Work on the handsome residences of Mr. L. F. Bartoo and Mr. Geo. Griffin is progressing favorably. Between fifty and sixty dollars were added to the fund for decorating the M. E. church, on the Fourth, by the festival in the Pavillion near the wind pump. Mr. Beasley had the misfortune to lose his good cow last Thursday. She collided with an incoming train and as she was killed inside of the corporation, of course the B. R. is not responsible. ; Remington is rapidly putting on the airs of a city. Three fights in one day and the offices of the dispensers of law daily thronged with seekers after redress for real or fancied wrongs. Anson Blood and daughter of Red Oak, lowa,’ spent last week with relatives and friends in this place, their former home. Remington was fq]J to overflowing last Wednesday and every thing passed off pleasantly and pleasure of the day, excepting perhaps, the extreme heat. The Fair Ground was full, the speech of Hon. Byron K. Elliott was worthy of the undivided attention of the great throng assembled to hear him, the refreshments for man and beast were good, plentiful and cheap, and altogether it was a successful The horse races, base ball games and birade raoes were watched with
absorbing interest. The winning horses in the different classes were Billy Wonder, (wellnamed) Hitoga Chief, and Carrie W.' Reinington Ist 9, beat Montieello- 2 tol in the first game, Rensselaer beat the 2nd 9, of Remington 1G to 9 in the second game. Bert Spencer took first money in the bicycle race. It is rumored that there will be a race between Agitator and Billy Wonder on Friday of this week at at the Fair Ground.
