Restaurant Rates Suddenly Raised.

Linboin Journal. Mr. Wasserman, a restaurant keeper in Chicago, has learned something in a court there that will enable him to conduet_his business with considerable rectitude in the hereafter. A wealthy coF ored man came into his place not long ago and called for roast beef and usual accompaniments. About twenty minutes after he had seated himself, a waiter brought him a bill of fare and said, these are the rates.” “Never mind your rates,” said the hungry man, “bring on the dinner.” The dinner was brought and after it was dispatched Mr. Seales, the eater of it, discovered that his check called for $3.50 in the lawful currency of country, although the sign on the door indicated that a roast beef was served there for 35 cents. He then looked at his bill of fare and found that a cipher and a punctuation point had been added to the printed figures with a blue pencil so that it made a roast cost $3.50 the amount stated in the check- He refused to pay the bill because it was unreasonable, and the proprietor called in the police and gave his customer into their custody as a dead beat who would n6t pay for his dinner. Mr. Seales then paid the bill under protest and sued Wasserman for damages. The jury awards him twenty-sh% dollars. j
