Bbothkb Taj.magb’B sermon, charging spiritualism with causing insanity, finds a cartons comment in the news from Michigan, that a Scandinavian exhorcer at Menominee has succeeded in making eight persons insane in one month. As this is not wholly a novel case, and not nominally spiritualism, the great Brooklyn extorter ahould rise to ex* phin. Would it not be practically more value to the people if they were warned against undue excitements? and if the law prevented arrant blatherskites of all sorts from playing off their rant on the nerves of the populace? The trouble is not so much with the number of erased people that result from such causes, but the numotr of fools. In Brooklyn there is a fair sprinkling of the latter sort, and it is not just to attribute them all to spiritualistic frauds, or to preaching cranks. q -
Delaware Republicans met at Dover, Thursday, and selected Blaine delegates to Chicago. Louisiana Democrats in the Legislature have nominated Senator Gibson to succeed himself. Dakota Republicans, Wednesday, selected Blaine delegates to Chicago. Gresham is second choice. The Tennessee Democratic convention after a tix day’s session and contest, renominated R, L. Taylor for Governor. North Carolina Prohibitionists, at Raleigh, Thursday, put up a full State ticket, headed by W. F—Walker, of Greensboro. Five thousand Prohibitionists rallied st Metropolitan Opera House, New York Monday night Captain E. F. Ritter, of Indianapolis, was the principal speaker. The California Democratic platform, adopted Thursday, endorses Cleveland’s administration and tariff policy, favors Cleveland’s renomination; also a government telegraph. John S. Wise and about fifty of bis followers bolted the Virginia Republican convention, Thursday. Wise was opposed to the unit rule, and declared that he would carry the contest to Chicago. Blaine’s friends in New York figure out that he will receive within fifty-two votes of enough to nominate him on the first ballot at Chicago, and that after “favorite disposed of he will be nominated by acclamation practically. The Republican Convention of the First Minnesota District passed resolutions demanding that lumber, salt and sugar be placed on thef ree list, and then complimented Blaine without instructing for him. The Fourth District Convention instructed for Blaine. Hon. W. H. Morrison has written to a prominent Democrat in Quincy, 111., that he is a candipate for Vice-President, and asks that the State delegation to St Lania go instructed, so that if the viceprei idency is not given to Indiana he will stand a show to get it The statement was published recently, connecting the name of Senator Leland Stanford with the Presidency, and that of Senator Chase with second place. The former said in an'interview that the whole story is simply ridiculous. The thought never seriously entered his mind. He receives piles of letters every day urging him to become a candidate, hat he has not been, isnot now, and is not going to be a candidate this year for the Presidential nomination.
